What is geocache?

We were at Lake Somerville when she went all mysterious on me. "Where are we going?" says I.

"We’re going to Pecan Lake," says she.

"What's there?" says I.

"A camo-pill," says she.

"What's a camo-pill?" I asked.

"I dunno" says she. "It's a geocache...but I don't know what it looks like."

The communication went downhill from there but now I know what a camo-pill is. I also know about geocache.  "What’s a geocache?" says you.

Picture
Well, I dunno. For sure it's big for something I had never heard of. For another it’s a way to provide entertainment and excitement for kids. It gives you a little incentive to see a new part of the country and look at things in a different way. It’s really even more than that. It also gives you a chance to hone your skill (or not) with your GPS. Your kids can practice using a compass. Never can tell when they could need that.

Don’t have a GPS?  Well you do if you have an iPhone or a clone? Sally says it’s a glorified scavenger hunt and she may be right. I’ll tell you about what we did and you can see what you think.

PictureBeauty and destruction. That's nature.
We followed the directions on the iPhone and found the general area on Pecan Lake where this little camo-pill was hidden. Once we got in the general area it began spewing out directions that were more pointed. That’s because Sally was figuring out how to use the app.

Picture
She had pictures of the tree it was hidden in. I wandered around aimlessly looking for the right tree until she told me that it was 175 feet towards the southwest. I was sunk calf deep into clean tundra once, and she discovered the futility of wearing sandals on a search when she found the burrs. They were actually better hidden than the camo-pill.

Picture
By the time I got to her she understood the app a lot better. The app was great and did everything but spoon feed us and powder our behinds once she got up to speed.

Picture
We looked at her iPhone and there was a direction and a line. With the help of the compass on my iPhone we went right to it.

Picture
Whats a camo-pill? It's the thing I am holding in the picture. To be more precise it’s a pharmacy type pill bottle wrapped in camouflage duct tape. We found it in the crook of the tree right behind us. We dated and signed our name on the roster inside the camopill as proof we were there, put it back, and left. We were afraid our dog was going to suffer a burst bladder back at the house. I think we take him next time.

What’s geocache?  It was a $10.00 app for the iPhone. I can tell you that obviously, for some anyway, it is a passion. It's a passion that will be easy to develop if all the hiding places are this beautiful. At first I wondered what the point was until I looked around. As pretty as they are, as usual the pictures don't do it justice.

Picture
Going home, Sally looked on line and they are everywhere. Here you can see those in the area of Somerville Lake. You can start in your own neighborhood probably. We know that there are a bunch in ours.

If you want to see parts of Texas and keep your young'ns involved, just go to geocache.com. We like to get around and this adds spice to the trip. I think we will do it again.
