The Great Winter Storm of 2014

As a guess, I think we got about zero inches of snow during this world changing weather event. You can see by the car that there was something but think it would take a micrometer to measure. At the very least you would have to measure the drifts in millimeters, not inches. The white stuff by the wipers is not cotton. There was a dusting of snow and ice anywhere that didn't touch the ground.

As to the temperature, who knows when it gets cold for a duck. There are two ducks conversing on the bank of the pond and one that went for a swim.

This trailer is a good example of why the roads were dangerous. I don't suppose this is news for most of you but the structures separated from the heat of the earth will freeze first. Then as it gets colder, streets  and sidewalks that are built on or in the ground will freeze.

I just went out to see if there were any trees down. Sometimes a wet freeze after a drought can cause problems for trees even when you haven't noticed any wind.

Conroe Independent School District didn't hesitate to close schools and that was a relief. I have lived in the North but really cannot tell you that there are less bridges. Think perhaps it is just a case of doing a better job of clearing the ice. For sure, they have a lot more practice and equipment that is designated for the task. This year with it's frequent "polar vortex" is pretty strange. You can't really fault the city management. I think I would rather stay inside when this happens than spend the money on a batch of equipment that gathers dust most years. Reasonable people can have differing opinions.

PictureEye in the sky and posted for the public.
Sally was supposed to go to Bryan but this spiked her guns. She was pretty insistent but common sense prevailed.

I certainly breathed a sign of relief when I found out the freeways were closed in several places and she couldn't go.

Even though most of the chickens acted as though they were on South Beach, there was one exception.

A book about this one would be titled "lone survivor". Not to make light of the movie but she is, indeed, a lone survivor.

About two years ago our neighbor brought her over late one night. Her back was bare and she had a bedraggled set of tail feathers. He said that she was the only one remaining from his flock. Raccoons had decimated it. She was frightened but we put her on the roost alongside ours. At first she would steal through the fence and go home during the day. At night she would steal back. Over the next few weeks she bonded with the others.

Her coloring always makes her stand out. Today she stood out for another reason. She was "hunkered down" and just not moving much. I put her in a cage with a heat lamp but it didn't seem to make much of a change. Then we brought her inside and she seemed a little awestruck at being here. When it got dark I gave her fresh water and put her in a cage outside with a working heat lamp. Supposed to drop to 27 tonight.

Picture
Took the dogs out yesterday for a little "sled dog" practice. They seem to be able to cover the ground pretty well but their guidance systems appear to suffer from ADD.

That's ok, I'm used to that. So is mine. We don't have a sled anyway.

I guess you can tell the difference between the playboy dog with the fancy leather leash and the worker with the hay bale twine. Bobs leash matches his daddies camo overalls.

Picture
Donkeys can be sloppy eaters as you can see from all the hay on the ground. Now you may say I'm not too smart to be out forking this stuff in the freezing weather. Possibly you're right but I think it's better than rain.

Let the mud soak in and it's ruined.

Picture
Freezing temps made the hay dry and this much is there for a second time around. No trees down that weren't last week. Just started working on them with my new cordless chain saw. Not very heavy duty but works for the light stuff we do here.

Picture
Tomorrow's high is supposed to hit the sixties. When it got low 2 weeks ago we were in Florida and didn't think it was going to happen again. Now the weather report is calling for it again tomorrow, later this week and next week. Think I will insulate some pipes tomorrow if I can buy the insulation. Can't live on luck forever.

I think I will go to the air conditioning store first. Probably has been a run on the stuff at Home Depot and Lowes.

Don't like unpublished drafts so this is not done. Will update if needed.
